While non-biodegradable fabrics can take more than 200 years to decompose, the designer spoke about the alternative environment-friendly textile— Bamboo Silk Ikkat, the first-of-its-kind textile in the world. The fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, the first being oil, said Madhu passionately to an audience that listened in rapt attention. In such a field, where the environmental cost of one cotton t-shirt equals 2700 litres of water, Madhu believes that textile is the king and fashion can be a powerful tool for change. Her passion lies in handloom, hand woven textile and crafts. For the last three decades, Madhu has not only focused on traditional crafts but also sustainable textiles, including the innovative Bamboo Silk Ikkat.
